Key Ingredients
Microencapsulated Pure Retinol (Vitamin A)
- Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, has clinically proven to promote various anti-ageing benefits in both the epidermis and dermis
- It regulates fibroblast function to upregulate Elastin, Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid production
- It improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen production, slowing down collagen breakdown within skin, accelerating cell reproduction and normalizing skin keratinization
- Regular application improves skin elasticity, thickness and firmness effectively improving crepey and saggy skin.
- It stimulates new blood vessel formation that promotes delivery of nutrients and oxygen to skin cells resulting in faster repair of the damaged skin tissue like stretch marks.
- Retinoids are the gold standard in anti-ageing treatment however, high sensitivity to oxidation causes degradation in the presence of air and sunlight which reduces the efficacy during product storage.
- The use of microencapsulated Pure Retinol ensures stability and potency throughout the product shelf life. Encapsulated Retinol is easily released upon mechanical pressure, such as rubbing action, during application. This provides maximum active protection during storage and on demand skin delivery on application.
- Furthermore, it can have concentration‐dependent side effects including stinging, scaling and redness. When it comes to Retinol, higher is not always better as the side effects at higher dosage may outweigh the benefits. Optimal daily topical dose varies based on the site of application
Bakuchiol
- Found mainly in the seeds of the Indian plant Psoralea corylifolia (babchi) and has been used in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine for centuries
- Recent clinical studies have demonstrated that Bakuchiol offers potent anti-ageing benefits such as reduction in fine lines and wrinkles as well as improvement in skin firmness and elasticity with a good skin tolerance
- It is the most well-known phyto-retinol. Phyto-Retinol is an umbrella term for plant-based ingredients that have retinol-like activity but are not part of the retinoid family. Due to the above-mentioned concentration‐dependent side effects of Retinol, keeping Retinol concentration within safe limits and combining it with a well-established phyto-retinol will provide amplified anti-ageing benefits.
- It can enhance the activity of human skin fibroblasts and promote the synthesis of skin collagen, thus achieving its anti-ageing effect
- Further studies demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects of Bakuchiol. Oxidative and inflammatory stressors are closely related to cutaneous ageing, their prevention by bakuchiol improves the overall skin condition. Furthermore, such antioxidant, anti-inflammatory activity may reduce Retinol, side effects when combined.
Centella Asiatica Extract
- Centella asiatica, also known by common names Cica, Gotu kola or Tiger Grass, is a medicinal plant that has been used in folk medicine for hundreds of years as well as in scientifically oriented medicine.
- The active compounds include pentacyclic triterpenes, mainly asiaticoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid. They stimulate collagen synthesis which it is a key element in skin repair and regeneration.
- It is effective in the treatment of wounds, scratches and burns through promoting fibroblast proliferation and increasing the synthesis of collagen as well as inhibiting the inflammatory phase of scars
- Clinical research indicate that it can be used in the treatment of photoageing skin, cellulite and striae (stretch marks)
Sodium Hyaluronate (sodium salt of Hyaluronic Acid)
- Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring polysaccharide that is present in many sites in the human body especially skin where it has a protective, structuring and shock-absorbing role
- It has the ability to bind water up to 1000 times its volume and provides firmness and radiance to the skin
- Can be used topically to regenerate the skin and support hydration and elasticity
- Enhances the penetration of active ingredients through the stratum corneum (SC), which behaves as a barrier to the entry of the molecule into the deeper layers of the skin
- Topical preparations containing HA are used for their healing properties and decreasing skin irritation
- In two large studies, applying hyaluronic acid to early stretch marks (striae rubrae) made the stretch marks less noticeable
- Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt of HA and is commonly used in place of the acid due to its enhanced stability and solubility. Moreover, it has a smaller molecular size which enables it to effectively penetrate the skin and can be produced with a high purity rate
Oat Beta Glucan
- Bioactive polysaccharide, a structural polymer, which has documented biological activities fundamental to maintaining skin homeostasis balance
- Possess specific properties that could benefit overall skin health and offers soothing, wound healing, ultraviolet radiation (UV) protection, antibacterial and antioxidant activities
- Despite its large molecular size, deeply penetrates the skin into the epidermis and dermis offering benefits on multiple skin layers
- Forms a film on the surface of the skin to reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and skin dryness
- A clinical study of 27 human subjects was performed to evaluate the effects of beta-glucan on fine-lines and wrinkles. After 8 weeks of treatment, digital image analysis indicated a significant reduction of wrinkle depth and height, and overall roughness.
White Tea Leaf Extract
- Clinical studies demonstrated very high anti-elastase capacity of white tea extract inhibiting over 89% of elastase activity. Elastin is a protein in the dermis layer of skin responsible for skin elasticity. Elastease is an enzyme involved in the breakdown of elastin fibre network reducing skin elasticity as we age. Anti-elastase compounds can preserve our natural skin elasticity for a longer period of time
- Similarly, very high anti-collagenase capacity was observed in clinical studies where white tea extract inhibited 87% of collagenase activity. Collagen is a protein in the dermis layer of skin responsible for the tensile strength of skin. Collagenase is an enzyme involved in the breakdown of collagen leading to wrinkles and fine lines. Anti-collagenase compounds prolong the natural collagen content within skin delaying the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines
- Includes very high phenolic content offering antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. When applied topically, it can help reduce the signs of skin ageing and skin damage including wounds and burns
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
- Topical treatment with Niacinamide reduced the progression of skin ageing and hyperpigmentation improving wrinkles, elasticity, and skin colour in clinical trials
- Topical Niacinamide improves tissue regeneration by increasing fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis as well as inhibiting collagen degradation
- Studies suggest that Niacinamide alleviates oxidative stress by inhibiting the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals which can induce oxidation of lipids, proteins and DNA causing damage to skin cells
- Significantly reduces the UV-induced inflammatory response, compared to the control sites in clinical studies
- Enhances the structural and functional integrity of the skin barrier. It regulates the synthesis of major components of skin barrier such as ceramides, other sphingolipid fractions (glucosylceramide and sphingomyelin), free fatty acids, and cholesterol
- Topical application of Niacinamide may reduce cytotoxicity and pigmentation in the skin that is exposed to UV
- Niacinamide is crucial for the synthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), which is then used to synthesize NADH and NADPH coenzymes. The latter are essential coenzymes in redox reactions and energy generation processes within mammalian cells
CoEnzyme Q10
- Ubiquinone, also known as coenzyme Q10 or Co Q10, is a naturally occuring lipid‐soluble antioxidant in human cells which is crucial for cellular energy production
- Its main functions are first, maintenance of sufficient cellular energy levels to stop the decline of mitochondrial activity and second, antioxidant protection against reactive oxygen species (ROS) originating from any source
- Q10 levels within cells are diminished with age and under the influence of external stress factors resulting in a decline in energy production as well as mitochondrial activity. As a consequence, cell and tissue functions are impaired and visible structural alterations occur. These result in the well‐known signs of skin ageing, for example, the appearance of wrinkles and lines as well as loss of elasticity
- Topical Q10 treatment is beneficial in effective Q10 replenishment, increase of cellular energy metabolism, and antioxidant effects
- Clinical studies show that topical application of Q10 significantly increased its levels on the skin surface as well as in the deeper layers of the epidermis indicating effective supplementation
